Veritas Small Bevel-Up Bench Plane (Ref: 952924)

This low angle smoother is 225mm long, 59mm wide and weighs only 1.25kg. It is easier to handle than a full size smoother. Think of it lying somewhere between a large block plane and a full size smoother, then you’ll see just how useful this plane can be. Like a full size version, it is useful for final finishing of surfaces, end-grain work and for shooting mitres. The ductile cast iron body is fully stress-relieved, machined and surface ground. The 44mm wide A2 blade has a bed angle of 12°. The locking front knob controls the adjustable mouth, closed to a narrow slit for fine shavings or opened for heavier cuts. An adjustable stop-screw in the throat lets you open the mouth fully for blade removal (for honing) and replacement, yet quickly restores your chosen mouth setting. The large wooden front knob and rear handle provide both comfort and excellent control. The Norris-style adjustment mechanism, with its combined feed and lateral adjustment knob, makes blade setting easy and accurate. Set screws prevent the blade from shifting, but allow full lateral adjustment.Made in Canada.

In a nutshell, O1 steel is easy to hone and a very fine edge achieved relatively quickly. A2 steel is a little more difficult to sharpen but retains its edge for longer. The downside being, because of the different grain structure the A2 won't be quite as sharp as the O1. What does this mean in practice? If you're roughing something to size or planing abrasive exotics then A2 is probably the better choice. However, for fine finishing or the pure pleasure of working with the very sharpest of tools then go for the O1 option. For working difficult grain, blades are available with 38° or 50° bevels in A2 or O1 steel, and a toothed A2 blade. The toothed blade is ideal for working with difficult grain, especially knots. The small, square teeth leave a textured surface that can be smoothed with a finely set plane or a scraper.
